Prince Albert Police focused on distracted driving during a one-day traffic safety blitz in the city June 24. The initiative was in conjunction with SGI’s June traffic safety spotlight.
Over the course of eight hours, members with Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan (CTSS) and the Prince Albert Police Traffic Services section issued 15 tickets to drivers using their cell phones while behind the wheel.
The Prince Albert Police Service would like to remind the public that it is illegal to use, hold or view a hand-held cell phone while driving. Drivers who choose to use their phones while behind the wheel risk the safety of themselves and others.
In February, fines for distracted driving increased to $580 for a first offence plus four demerit points.
Police also issued numerous tickets during the one-day traffic safety initiative for various other infractions including driving without a license, driving while disqualified, unregistered vehicle, speeding, disobey stop sign and disobey a red light.
Drivers should always place their cell phone out of reach while driving to prevent distraction.
