Prince Albert Police Service Welcomes New Elders
The Prince Albert Police Service is pleased to announce the addition of two new Elders to guide and advise members and staff as they continue working toward reconciliation and understanding.
Prince Albert Police Chief Jonathan Bergen officially welcomed Elder Liz Settee and Elder Leonard Ermine at a short event Thursday afternoon. Both Elders were gifted with cloth and tobacco and a beaded medallion adorned with the Prince Albert Police Service logo.
The Elders will act as spiritual guides for the police service and will lead members and staff in teachings and learning on Indigenous traditions and culture.
“Today is a very important day for our police service and I want to thank Elder Settee and Elder Ermine for agreeing to work with us to support our service as we continue to move forward on our path toward reconciliation,” Chief Bergen said. “In policing, we must always strive to represent those we serve in the community with respect and honour. Understanding the history of our community is important to our success as an organization.”
Both Elder Settee and Elder Ermine are well known for their work within the local community, including with local youth and the Prince Albert Grand Council. Sheryl Kimbley, Chair of the Prince Albert Board of Police Commissioners said the addition of two Elders is a significant move forward for the police service and our community and asked the new Elders to continue including local youth as part of their work with the police service going forward.
“Our youth need to be lifted up and need to realize their importance,” Chair Kimbley added.
Elder Settee and Elder Ermine have come on board following the unfortunate passing of police Elder Jacob Sanderson, who passed away in the fall of 2020. Chief Bergen said the lessons learned before Elder Sanderson’s passing are valued.
“We respect the knowledge and teachings he was able to give us and I believe that his work will continue to help guide us as we move forward,” Chief Bergen said.
Chief Bergen also thanked Erin Parenteau, Indigenous Resource Officer with the police service, for her significant efforts in welcoming Elder Settee and Elder Ermine to the police service, and for her continued work to lead all members and staff in understanding and reconciliation.
