Media Release – In-custody Death Investigation

The Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the death of a 30-year-old Prince Albert man.

On Tuesday evening, December 1, 2020, Prince Albert Police Service members apprehended the man on a Detention Order pursuant to s. 45.1(1) of The Public Health Act. He was taken to police cells overnight and then transported to the Victoria Hospital the following morning for assessment and treatment.

Prince Albert Police were later advised that the man had died in hospital on December 5, 2020. An autopsy was performed on December 9th. The death remains under investigation by the Saskatchewan Coroners Service, with police assistance.

The death is being investigated as an in-custody death and therefore the Prince Albert Police Service has requested that the Saskatchewan Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety appoint an independent observer as per Section 91.1(1) of the Police Act, 1990.

 

Any further inquiries should be directed to the Office of the Chief Coroner.
